How to Copyright Any Publication Without Cost

To establish a copyright for your original works, all that is required is that you add a copyright notice, either on the cover or the page immediate following the cover in your book, report, etc.

Some examples:

Copyright 2013, John Doe

(c) 2013, John Doe

© 2-13, John Doe

The last version is preferable because the copyright symbol is considered an international symbol, while the word "copyright" is an English word.

Most people do not know that you are NOT required to register the copyright with the copyright office; however, there is still an advantage to officially registering your copyright. For example, if there is ever a dispute about who created an original work, an official registration would easily set the matter to rest in court.

So a copyright registration can help prove you are the original author. But as long as ownership of the copyright is not in dispute, merely including a copyright notice in your work is sufficient to create a fully legal copyright.
